SGVFD Society

Introduction

The South Galiano Volunteer Fire Department Society was incorporated November 14th, 1963 with membership open to the general public. The SGVFD Society has an agreement with the Capital Regional District to provide fire protection and emergency response.
 


Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is responsible for the management of the South Galiano Volunteer Fire Department. The Board is made up of the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer and members at large. Past board of directors can be found here

Policies:

Open Burning (passed May 22, 2014)

The SGVFD shall provide written permits (which may include an online printable version) in accordance with CRD, provincial and federal regulations for the purpose of open burning in the service area. Permits shall direct the property owner/occupier to the appropriate regulations and do not replace the obligation of the property owner/occupier to monitor the ventilation index and or weather conditions.

Upon being made aware of a contravention of the CRD bylaws, provincial or federal regulations, the Fire Chief or other Local Assistant to the Fire Commissioner shall investigate, and may cancel permits, make recommendations and orders to correct or mitigate fire hazards, may issue tickets and extinguish the fire.

Fire Hazard Inspection (passed May 22, 2014)

Upon receipt of a complaint, or if a Local Assistant to the Fire Commissioner (LAFC) has reasonable grounds to believe that a premises located in the South Galiano Service Area is in a state of disrepair or is so used or occupied that a fire would endanger life or property, or contain combustible or explosive material that would endanger life or property, or otherwise contain or constitute a fire hazard, the SGVFD shall inspect the premises at the first reasonable opportunity. The inspection shall be conducted by a LAFC who may issue a written order directing the owner or occupier of the premises to remedy any identified fire hazard within a reasonable time set by the order.
